The interview round: the one you cannot practise alone

Whatever else is tested, this round tests whether you can hold a conversation about your own work under mild pressure. It is the round students prepare least and lose most often.

What the round looks like

Twenty to forty minutes, spoken. Resume-driven questions, a follow-up on whatever you just said, and at least one question you do not know the answer to — which is deliberate.

Where it goes wrong. Reading a list of interview questions does almost nothing for this round, because the difficulty is in speaking, not in knowing. The only preparation that transfers is answering out loud and being told what was wrong with it.

How to prepare, in this order

The order matters more than the hours.

Answer out loud, not in your head. The gap between the two is the whole round

Prepare the three questions that always come: yourself, your project, and a weakness

Have an honest answer ready for a question you cannot answer — panels are testing for that

Record yourself once. It is uncomfortable and it is the fastest correction available
